Attacks on Tim Walz’s Military Record

The newest attack (attempt) is on Tim Walz’s military record. And it comes from Donald Trump’s vice-presidential running mate, JD Vance. According to Vance, Gov Walz served in the National Guard, separating from service when his unit was asked to deploy to the mid-East! In essence, Vance is trying to suggest Walz’s separation was dishonorable because he did not deploy with his unit, even though Vance honorably deployed while he was in the Marines.

Let’s set the record straight and look at both records.

JD Vance joined the Marines in 2003, and served as a military correspondent until 2007. “Vance was deployed to Iraq for six months in late 2005. Based on his memoir, he would “attach to different units to get a sense of their daily routine,” escort civilian press, and write stories about individual marines.” [https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/07/16/was-jd-vance-marine-military/74411600007/]

So, in short, Vance served for four years and deployed for six months in a non-combative role. Okay. That’s honorable, even if he inferred something more during his negative comment about Walz.

“Walz served in the military for 24 years, enlisting in the Nebraska National Guard at 17 in 1981 and then transferring to the Minnesota National Guard in 1996. He retired in 2005 to begin his successful run for the U.S. House, representing Minnesota as command sergeant major, among the highest ranks for enlisted soldiers. His battalion went on to deploy to Iraq shortly after Walz’s retirement.” [https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/08/06/tim-walz-military-career-national-guard/74685414007/]

Walz specialized in heavy artillery. During 21 years of dealing with heavy artillery, Walz suffered hearing loss and tinnitus in both ears. He was allowed to continue his career after surgery restore some of his hearing.

In January 2005, Walz filed the Statement of Candidacy to the Federal Election Commission that notified election officials of his plans to run for Congress. He submitted his retirement paperwork to the National Guard in May 2005. In July 2005, the National Guard unit was notified to be ready for deployment. Walz’s unit was not ordered to deploy until August 2005, after Walz submitted his paperwork.

Clearly, Walz’s retirement from the National Guard had little to nothing to do with the potential deployment of his unit. To suggest otherwise is dishonorable. JD Vance served 4 years and deployed for 6 months in a non-combative position. Tim Walz served 24 years, six times longer, making a career of his service.

Both men should be thanked for their service. But, JD Vance needs to find something else to combat the popularity of the Harris-Walz ticket. This particular tack has fallen flat!

You should be ashamed Mr. Vance!

Tampon Tim??

Oh come on, MAGA! Surely you can do better than trying to denigrate Tim Walz (pronounced Walls), Kamala Harris’ pick for her running mate, with such a lame nickname. Of course, I’m not sure why a nasty “nickname” is needed at all. Are these adults or what?

So, where did the nickname come from? It seems Governor Walz signed a bill that requires all schools in Minnesota to provide menstrual supplies in all bathrooms. Since the bill did not specify only female bathrooms, the supplies are required in both girls and boys restrooms! Free supplies, no less! Heaven forbid – what will they think of next?!?

From what I’ve read, Megyn Kelly found this bill offensive and thus, called Gov Walz “Tampon Tim” because of it. Not just because he made the supplies available but also because he included them in the boys’ restroom!

I am old enough to remember when the girls’ bathroom in my schools had sanitary napkin dispensers. These were not free, but at least they were there. I also remember when one of my schools didn’t have the dispensers.

I was a freshman in high school in Brooklyn, NY. I unexpectedly started my period mid-day and didn’t have anything with me. There were no supplies in the restroom, so I went to the nurse’s office (we had a full-time nurse in the school in those olden days). Surely, she would have supplies.

Nope! The nurse didn’t have any supplies either. I asked her if I could call my mother to bring me supplies. She said I had a choice – I could just go back to class (and bleed on my clothes) or I could call my mother to take me home “sick”! Really? That’s the solution!

Obviously, I couldn’t stay at school and be embarrassed so I called Mom. She wasn’t upset that I wasn’t really sick but said I should be prepared next time!

I applaud Gov Walz for being sensitive to the issues that young ladies face when at school. I was not the first young girl who had the problem, I doubt I was the last, and I’m sure there will be more in the future. Thanks to Gov Walz at least the girls in Minnesota won’t have to choose between embarrassing themselves or missing class.

As for providing the supplies in boys’ restrooms? I think it’s a good idea. I don’t know about any of you out there, but I have used a boys’/mens’ restroom when I had to. Things happen and necessity is the mother of invention. If the ladies room is not available, for whatever reason, girls will use the boys room. When you gotta go, you gotta go!

The right seems to think this is a winning issue for them, so they have tried trending #TamponTim on social media. It has backfired with a huge BANG! Period poverty is a thing and it’s real! Providing free feminine hygiene products ensures protection for embarrassment while allowing girls to concentrate on learning!

What is wrong with the right? Why don’t they care about their daughters, sisters, friends? I just don’t get it!

National Association of Black Journalists Convention

On Wednesday, July 31, 2024, Donald Trump attended the NABJ annual convention and faced three Black women (Rachel Scott of ABC News, Kadia Goba of Semafor, and Harris Faulkner from Fox News) for an interview. It did not go well – for him!

Predictably, Trump was unfocused, racist and insulting. The comment that has generated the most buzz was his comment regarding Kamala Harris’ race: “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago,” he blathered, “when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black. So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?” [https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/nabj-black-journalists-trump-harris/]

Rachel Scott attempted to fact-check Trump by stating the VP has always identified as a Black woman; she attended a Historically Black College, was a member of a Black sorority, etc. It didn’t have any effect on Trump. In fact, he has doubled-down on the claim since then.

At one point during the interview, Trump claimed Harris and the democrats support abortions of fully alive, already born babies! What in the h*ll is he talking about?!?

The interview was about an hour late. To hear Trump, the delay was due to faulty equipment at the convention. The truth, however, is Trump was back stage throwing a hissy fit because he was told he would be fact-checked live during the interview. Naturally, that is not something Trump likes – he loves to lie, lie, lie and he doesn’t want anyone fact checking him at all much less live!

I’m not sure who in Trump’s campaign thought this was a good idea and encouraged him to do the interview, but whoever it was should be fired! On the other hand, I think the interview was important for a variety of reasons.

This interview revealed Trump’s racist and misogynistic tendencies in real time. His supporters got a live look at how Trump handles hard questions by reporters who hold him to account and don’t let him dodge a question.

The interview reinforced to Black voters the true essence of the man – in case they forgot. He did not do the most to promote Black people – more than any other president including Abe Lincoln!! It very well may have reminded voters why they did not vote for him in 2020 and may very well have turned many voters against him in 2024! One can hope!

The interview may have made an impact on the “middle of the roaders” – those who have not committed to a candidate or those who may have planned to sit out this election. They saw a man flustered, out of control, and frustrated – something they may not have seen in the past. And they didn’t have to read about it from any media – they could watch it in real time!

I commend Rachel Scott and the other two women who asked pertinent, relevant questions and waited/insisted Trump answer them. This was how interviews should be conducted. There should be no free passes. Trump and Harris are vying for the highest office in the land – Leader of the Free World. There should be no softball questions, no letting off the hook, and no preplanned questions. Ask the tough questions, the policy questions and make them answer. Fact check them when necessary. Only then will the “real leader” emerge and the choice will be made clear!

The interview was scheduled to last an hour. However, after about 35 minutes of Trump missteps, his campaign called a halt and Trump walked out.

Prisoner Swap

On August 1, 2024, the Biden administration on Thursday announced it had secured the release of three American citizens from Russia, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, Marine veteran Paul Whelan and Russian-American radio journalistAlsu Kurmasheva. The swap took months to negotiate and involved multiple countries – United Statess, Russia, Germany, Belarus, and others.

There were a total of 24 prisoners swapped, some of which were Russian nationals returned to Russia – 3 in the US, 2 in Slovenia, 1 in Poland, and 1 in Norway. By far, the biggest fish Russia wanted back was Vadim Krasikov, a convicted murderer held in Germany.

While the country hailed the Biden-Harris administration for this swap, Donald Trump naturally denigrated the swap insisting the US paid for the release of the Americans. He has criticized the deal as being bad for the US, while congratulating Vladimir Putin for his part in getting so much. Once again it highlights his admiration for authoritarian dictators over his own country.

The Trump administration (2017-2020) made a few swap deals of its own. Let’s see how good a negotiator Trump really is:

  • In November 2019, the Trump administration secured the release of American Kevin King and Australian Timothy Weeks, who were being held by the Taliban, in exchange for the release of three senior Taliban leaders being held in jails in Afghanistan. (2 for 3)
  • In December 2019, the U.S. did a prisoner exchange with Iran, freeing Xiyue Wang, a graduate student at Princeton University who was serving a 10-year sentence in Iran on espionage charges. To secure Wang’s release, the U.S. freed Masoud Soleimani, an Iranian scientist convicted of export violations. (1 for 1)
  • In July 2020, the Trump administration secured the release of Michael White, a Marine veteran jailed in Iran on charges of insulting the country’s supreme leader, in exchange for the release of a dermatologist convicted on export violations. (1 for 1)
  • In October 2020, a deputy assistant to Trump helped broker a deal to free two Americans being held hostage by Iranian-backed militants in Yemen in exchange for the release of about 250 Houthi rebels being held in Oman. (1 for 250)

Let’s not forget the really BIG ONE – the release of 5,000 Taliban! Yes, 5,000! Trump negotiated directly with the Taliban, leaving the Afghanistan government out of the deal.

In my opinion, that disproves Trump’s claim that he never “paid” for the release of American hostages/prisoners.

Biden didn’t secure the release of all Americans being held in Russia. But he has worked tirelessly to secure as many as possible. All of this while he fought COVID (again), ran a presidential campaign, and battled members of his own party calling for him to bow out of the up-coming election! I’d say that was pretty remarkable! It was a tremendous feat to put together the alliances to pull this off. I doubt very much Trump could have accomplished this, no matter what he says. Our allies would not have worked with Trump the way they have with Biden. That’s a fact!

We all owe President Biden our thanks for working so hard to return these prisoners to their families!

IMHO . . .

Past Few Weeks…

As a reminder, my keyboard is acting up, so please forgive typos.

What do I feel about the past few weeks? A whole myriad of things have gone through my mind.

First, I haven’t been happy that so many Democrats piled on President Biden, urging him to drop out of the race. I hated that for him – he didn’t deserve it! He has done so much for the country, I only have the highest admiration for him. I know he’ll continue to serve this country until the oath of office is administered to the next president, whoever that will be (please not Trump!). I thank him with my whole heart for his more than 5 decades – yes, 50 years – of public service. You don’t have to agree with his policies or politics to admire and respect the man.

I, too, was worried about the election after the debate. As the days went by and more people were calling on Biden to drop out of the race, I felt we had to s**t or get off the pot. Either pull the plug or drop it! But, it needed to be resolved quickly because we’re getting so close to the Democratic National Convention.

I’m glad Biden stepped up. And I’m glad he endorsed Kamala Harris. I think she will unite us and move us forward – she’s already had a positive impact. So now let’s rally and get this done!!

BTW, clearly Trump and the rest of MAGA world are scared s**tless! He has gone on a two day social media frenzy. I’m loving it! Go ahead, Donald, and sue for the DNC to reimburse you for your media ads/attacks on Biden. Your campaign should be centered on your policies rather than on negative attacks on your opponent!

The shooting – the assassination attempt? I was very upset that this occurred. However, I started being as suspicious as other X (twitter) users. Why hasn’t the treating physician provided the public with specifics? Why hasn’t the Trump campaign provided a photo or description from someone other than fake Rep Ronny Jackson, the former White House physician who proclaimed Trump was the healthiest president in US history? [By the way, how did he know how healthy/unhealthy prior presidents such as Washington, Adams, Jefferson,, etc, were??]

Do I think he got injured? Yes. Do I think he was shot? Not so sure. I’m starting to lean towards glass from a broken teleprompter. But, I’m also wondering just what the injury was – how bad it was.

The day after the shooting Trump apparently went golfing. Pictures taken during that outing revealed no bandage – or, at least not a big bandage like he had on last week. And from those same pictures I was not able to see any swelling, scab, redness, or anything else to indicate an injury.

So, was he really injured? Did he have anything more than a “pin head” size poke? Head injuries tend to bleed A LOT. I suppose ear injuries would too. I had glass fall on my head when I was 10 years old. I bled like my head was cut off! In reality, it was one little pin prick from one piece of glass. So, the blood we saw on July 13th could have been something similar.

All of sudden, though, at last week Republican convention, he has a bandage the size of a maxi pad on his ear! I mean, come on! Clearly, he was going for the sympathy vote! “I took a bullet for democracy.” Images from after the convention, show a smaller, flesh-colored bandage.

If reports are accurate, he was out golfing yesterday again. A clip of a video showed no bandage at all. In fact, you can’t even see a scab or anything on the ear. Rep (Dr) Jackson’s letter indicated the “wound” was 2 centimeters wide and would need constant monitoring because it bleed once in a while! Uh huh! Sure! I’ll buy that bridge!

As for the shooter, I’m not so sure he was actually trying to assassinate Trump. I think he was trying to commit suicide by cop! From all accounts, the shooter researched both Trump and Biden to see what events were coming up and where they would be held. Trump’s was the earliest and the closest to his home.

By researching both candidates, I find it hard to believe his motive was political. Schoolmates have said that he was a conservative and had been for a long time. But, if so, that begs the question why would he target Trump?

No, I think he wanted to commit suicide and make a noise doing it.

Regarding the Secret Service, yes, it was a failure. However, reports coming from a local law enforcement commissioner indicate there were failures (multiple) by local law enforcement who were tasked with covering the building from which the shots came. I hate that the director was made to resign over this. We’re only 10 days out from the incident and the investigations are on-going. I personally think it’s too early to hold Congressional hearings, hold anyone to account, etc. The investigations should be allowed to continue uninterrupted. After we get all the facts, then we can point fingers about incompetence or whatever.

There you go! Just my meanderings from the past few weeks. Again, I’m sorry I was away. Technology is great – until it isn’t!!

Just sayin’ . . .

I’ve Moved . . .

You have, undoubtedly, noticed I’ve been absent the past several weeks – during all the “mess” after the debate, no less! EGADS!

I’ve been having a lot of trouble with the site dashboard – and yes, I’ve paid the bills! So much so that I’ve moved the site to another server.

Unfortunately, it means I’ve lost all the prior posts! Sorry about that – it couldn’t be helped. Now I’m having trouble with my keyboard – letters sticking or not working. So please forgive any typos! I’m trying here!
